Day in the Life of a Nonprofit Communicator – Susan Yingling

Susan Yingling

Welcome to our first installment for 2018 in our series on the “Day in the Life” of nonprofit communicators! This series lets you describe your workday in your own words.

We’d love to feature YOU in this series! Don’t be shy – tell us what you do in a typical day as a nonprofit communications pro.

Susan Yingling has over 30 years of experience in Government and Nonprofit work.  She is currently the Director of Administration and Marketing for the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children in Columbus, Ohio.

And this is her typical day:

Before 8:00 a.m. – Stop at Starbucks for a Venti Iced Chai Tea Latte with a shot of espresso.

8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m – Go through my emails, voicemails and to do list.

Tackle any deposits, invoicing or memberships issues.

10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. – Create a list of topics for 10:30 staff meeting with Executive Director and other staff.

From 10:30 to 12:00 staff call with Executive Director to discuss weekly priorities and review to do lists, calendars, etc. to make sure committee meetings, board calls and projects are covered.

12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. – Take 30 minutes for lunch and to refresh my brain.

Then check email, voicemail and begin working on projects that have the priority for the week like marketing emails.

2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. – Work on marketing campaign for the January conference, review room block listing for board meeting prior to the conference and update website content.

Grab a quick glass of water or tea to bring back to my desk.

Finalize insurance renewals.

After 4:00 p.m. – Make a list of top priorities for the next day, leave the office to stop at the bank to make a deposit and mail necessary book orders at UPS.

Thanks for sharing your day, Susan!
